I met a film producer while checking in to my hotel He had a British accent, I said London or Birmingham he said neither. I mentioned a famous face book friends name, he didn’t know him, he was not with them. ‘He claimed to be small time something about a Punjab movie. I of course went back to my journalism roots and looked up the title on imdb.
As he approached the lobby exit, he said you again. I had mentioned I was a writer. I told him his preproduction job was up already, he looked shocked. I told him that now a days, they will put up a photo on Facebook etc., before the movie is distributed or hits the streamers in 2 months after. His pre production film, Feeling Pungabi.
Think about that Superman ( 2025) drops on Max September 19, 2025.
I don’t know why those in the entertainment industry under play themselves. Maybe it’s the train ride up a career and the elevator crash to mid level or even the bottom of a soon to be you tube hit. The public is fickle; they like to build you up for months or years and take you down in a TIK TOK post with three hundred thousand views.
Take the recent political news stories, where people are fired for saying things before real bad things happen in real life. As a writer, you have to curb your enthusiasm, ( pun intended). You may not want to offend your next interviewed, potential super star.
A few days later After the Baz Luhrmans, Elvis’s screening ( second place people’s choice Tiff awardee) I ran into a handsome young man, think Paul Newman with George Harrison Hair, he had been helpful guiding us to our seats.
He said something, I asked if he was a filmmaker, a recent film school, graduate he replied He was a director, but preferred cinematography. I gave him a name of a fbf, who he had not heard of. I told him he was famous, and he was also on Instagram.
Which takes me to the tile of this piece. Peter Gabriel sang decades ago about the big time. Everyone wants the fame ( David Bowie said steer far from it)
One of the main actresses. In Palestine 36 was overwhelmed by the standing ovation , that went on for several minutes. She said, don’t clap for me for being Palestinian, clap because I’m a great actress. It’s after all what we want recognition. She put her hand to her face as noted in the photo below.
Big or little it doesn’t matter, it’s participating in the art game, that is the real reason we write act, direct etc. It’s a life thing.
