THE SECOND EDITION
cr2020 Darrell J Banks
Somewhere in pre corona time, I stared the second edition of Character Within the Screenplay.
I knew this revision would require a lot of research, because the concentration this time would not only be on character development but on science fiction. I read a lot of books, bought a lot of used science fiction books and began the process. I began the journey that should take a few months at best.
But something happened the week of March 14, 2020.
Covid 19 created havoc. If you read my op ed my life became crazier. Perhaps your life descended into chaos too. My children were grown, but even without some tiny ones or teens about, life descended into chaos.
Every thing closed down, the contracting the job, etc. I wrote my bike to get around the neighbor and surrounding areas to find an open store to gather toilet paper.
COVID 19 took away my usual writing spot at the university, which remains closed. My routine of and iced mocha at Star bucks and two hours of writing and editing the second edition collapsed.
As you will read in most writing manuals you have to sit ( or stand) for some time to call yourself a writer. It’s a tough process ( watch Sly Stallone write a screenplay by hand on Face book). I never ever worked at home, no wi fi, thus the Starbucks. I tethered my phone to the lap top, or used the wi fi at the public library if I needed to complete some research.
The Internet is a big distraction for a writer. Theirs Huntington Beach Live, Santa Monica Beach and even.a view of the New York Harbor on earth cam.com.
Throw in some Facebook a little bit of Twitter or Pinterest and well you can find yourself an hour behind schedule.
But I deter. Writing is a habit, be it good or bad set of events or dependencies. Once you establish your habit of writing daily, the coffee, the time frame, the pattern. It is difficult to adjust to a new set of parameters. But if you want to leave something for the living or just enjoy writing as I do, you make do.
Thus as I approach September, I hope to complete this second edition.
B. HOW DO YOU CREATE A SECOND EDITION AND WHY
Now Sly wrote Rocky to kick off his decade after decade career as a writer, producer and actor.
- THE WHY
W- Who is your character?
H- How do they react to the people around them?
Y-You are in total control of this character’s actions
The WHY is a simple formula used to create great characters in fiction, TV episodes and screenplays.
In part two of this we will continue our journey see you soon.
Ciao
